Anyone can easily start a blog nowadays.

Wrote your first post? Fantastic! But what next?

Well, success is not guaranteed.
But, we can make it more likely by doing the right things.
I started my first blog in 2009 when blogging was just starting to grow. Since then I have learned a lot about blogging, including what works and what doesn’t.
This guide is a culmination of all the things that I’ve learned throughout the years.
I really hope you enjoy it!
Within this guide, you’ll find popular blogging tips that can help you grow a well-established blog into a leading online resource.
So bookmark this page and make sure to tweet it or share on Facebook so all your blogger friends can see it too!
Full Disclosure: Please note that this page includes affiliate links. It simply means if you click on these links and decide to make a purchase, at NO additional cost to you (none whatsoever!), I may get compensated, by the affiliate program. Will this be a problem? In fact, if you click and buy, thank you. I really appreciate it.
So, let’s get started…
1. Choose a Memorable Blog Name
Choosing a memorable blog name is one of the most important things you’ll do when starting your blog. You want to choose something that is easy to remember and also has some search engine optimization (SEO) potential.
A catchy, memorable blog name will make it easy for your readers to remember and come back to your site. It’s also good for search engine optimization.
A great blog name is one that represents your website topic or niche so that the reader can easily identify what your site is about.
For example, my blog is called ‘Digital Millions‘.
It’s catchy, easy to remember.
In fact, when people search on Google for ‘Digital Millions‘ this blog ranks in the top 10 results! So, you want to do the same thing.
You want a catchy name that people will still remember after a couple of years. The name you choose for your site is one of the most important decisions you will make. So, take time and give some thought to the name.
Don’t rush into this as you’re going to be using it for a long time.
Most of the top blogs in the world use simple names that are memorable and relevant to their niche. You should do it too.
2. Get Your Own Custom Domain
Having your own custom domain is vital for running any kind of online business. Having your own domain will help enhance the professional image of your blog and it’s another way to build trust with your readers.
Custom domains also help with branding and increase the perceived value of your blog. I cannot stress how important it is that you get your own custom domain as soon as possible. It doesn’t matter how small or new your blog is, you should get your own custom domain now!
Custom domains like “www.myexampleblog.com” are typically sold for around $10 per year. So, you should not have to pay more than that.
Nowadays most web hosts offer a free domain name when you sign up for a hosting account. If your selected host doesn’t offer a free custom domain, I highly recommend that you consider switching to a host that does.
Here are some web hosts that offer free domain names:
- HostGator
- Bluehost
- GreenGeeks
- DreamHost
- iPage
So, for my example blog, I got DigitalMillions.org from HostGator as they offer a free domain name with their hosting.
The point is that you should not use any free domain or subdomain from a website that does not own. For example, free blogging sites like WordPress.com or Blogger.com are great for personal use but they are not suitable for running a blog for doing business online. Because you get very limited options to grow.
Using a free domain makes your blogging future a lot more difficult. It makes it hard to brand your website and you have less power over your website’s SEO potential. So, get your own custom domain name as soon as possible.
Full Disclosure: Please note that if you decide to buy hosting using any link on this page, at NO additional cost to you (none whatsoever!), I may get compensated, by the hosting company. Will this be a problem? In fact, if you click and buy, thank you. It really motivates me to create more quality content, free of charge.

3. Select a Good Web Host
This is so important!
Selecting a good web host will determine if your blog is fast, secure, and always online. Your web host is like the foundation for your house. If it’s not up to standard, the entire structure of your house will be weak and unstable.
It’s the same thing. If you select a cheap or bad web host, it might be unstable, slow, and insecure. So, make sure you select a good web host for your blog.
I recommend Hostgator because they offer some of the best Web hosting prices on the market. I’ve tried a few providers in the past and I can honestly say that Hostgator is one of the best for beginners.
Their web hosting plans start from just $2.75 per month and that includes a free domain name and unlimited storage and bandwidth!
So, there’s no reason why you should not signup for Hostgator right now. They offer 24/7 support and I’ve never had any problems with them!

Some of the best HostGator alternatives are:

- GoDaddy
So, signup to any one of these awesome web hosts and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed! Well, I haven’t tried all of them, but these are all highly reputable companies that offer excellent service, support, and value for money!
Well, I personally use and recommend HostGator. You can use this link to sign up and get a 60% discount with coupon code: DigitalMillions.
4. Choose WordPress CMS
WordPress is the best blogging platform.
97% of the top blogs in the world run on WordPress!
It’s free, open-source, super secure, and very easy to use. So, if you are looking for a blogging platform you should choose WordPress. It’s what I use for all my blogs and it makes managing them so much easier.
There are many other blog platforms out there, but none of them compare to WordPress. There’s no need for me to talk about all the pros and cons of different blogging platforms because it will be a whole article in itself!
Well, here are some of the benefits of using WordPress:
- It’s open-source. And, that’s why it’s 100% free.
- It has a huge community of support and developers.
- Customization is super easy and continuously improving.
- You can add plugins to make your blog even more powerful!
- There are thousands of WordPress themes.
- Most popular web hosts support WordPress.
- WordPress is used by almost 30% of the entire web.
- There are over 60 million WordPress sites in the world!
- It’s super-simple to install it on any domain.
- Most web hosts offer one-click installation for WordPress.
Do you need any more reason to choose WordPress?
I don’t think so!
Just do yourself a favor and select WordPress as your blogging platform, you won’t regret it. If you have no idea how to install WordPress on your hosting, don’t worry! Most popular web hosts have an in-depth tutorial on this.
And, if you’ve decided to go for HostGator, as I recommend, read this.

5. Buy Your Own Quality Theme
The next thing you should do is purchase your own premium WordPress theme. I highly recommend that you use a premium theme as they look so much better and more professional than free WordPress themes.
Premium themes are also fully responsive and mobile-friendly. This means there are no issues when viewing them on mobile devices.
Premium themes usually perform better and have a better design and functionalities than free themes. Also, they usually come with features like ecommerce and lead generation integration and loads more!
So, if you want to have a great-looking blog that is totally responsive and performs well, you should select one of the best themes out there.
Wondering how to choose the best theme?
A good blog theme should be easy to use and have a modern design that goes well with your niche. Also, the theme should be fully responsive so it looks great on all devices. You should also get technical support if something goes wrong.
Premium themes mostly also function better than free themes.
It’s just the design that is usually much better!
The functionality and features are frequently updated to keep up with the latest WordPress versions. And, you also get technical support.
Some of the best WordPress premium themes are:
Well, there are a few WordPress themes that are free but perform pretty well like Blocksy, GeneratePress, and Astra.

6. Select a Niche Carefully
Creating your blog about something that you are passionate about might sound interesting. Well, it works in many cases.
However, it’s not always a good idea in case your niche is not profitable.
For example, let’s say you created a blog to share your passion for cooking healthy recipes! And, your passion is so high that you are willing to work hard on the blog without really getting paid.
But, what happens if nobody actually cares about healthy recipes or cooking? You will be wasting your time and energy writing smart recipes that no one wants to read. Eventually, you’ll end up losing your motivation.
Yes, your passion is important, but you should also make sure that there are people who are interested in what you have to say.
For example, if your passion is about blogging or entrepreneurship, then that’s the way to go! Because there will always be people interested in these topics. And, you don’t have to work too hard to promote your blog.
You can just focus on creating the content! Since many people are searching for these topics, you have a much better chance of getting found.
You should also make sure that your topic is broad enough. For example, it’s pointless to create a blog about white tennis shoes.
It would be better to create a blog on “popular kinds of shoes” or “best sellers in shoes.” This way you have a wider target audience who might be interested in what you have to say about any kind of shoe.
And, you will also have more options to monetize your blog because it’s about shoes rather than white tennis shoes only!
Here are the elements that make the perfect blog niche:
- Minimal competition
- High-profit potential
- Solves a practical need
- Strong market demand
- Professionally and personally satisfying
Finally, your niche should be on a topic that is still growing.
It should be something that has been popular for a long time, yet it should also be something that will continue for many years.
For example, niches like food, beauty, or travel have been popular for years. And, they will continue to be popular because people love cooking, eating out at new restaurants, and traveling to new places. So, these niches will most likely stay popular for many years if not forever.
7. High Quality Content
Blogging is all about content. And, if you want your blog to be successful, the content should be high-quality.
In fact, some people will immediately leave your blog if the content is poor! That’s why it’s important to avoid low-quality articles.
It’s also important to make the content relevant, useful and entertaining for readers. Nobody will come back to your blog if it’s not interesting!
You might be wondering how to create high-quality blog content. Well, you can start by avoiding these three mistakes:
- Creating short articles with little value (less than 300 words).
- Writing about trivial topics.
- Stay away from spammy topics.
- Be creative and take your time with each post. Don’t rush!
- Don’t use complicated words that no one understands.
- Be clear and simple.
You should also avoid copying and pasting content from other sources. It’s really a bad idea to make your blog a “magnet” for penalties from Google.
And, make sure that the content is in-depth. Don’t just blabber about something in 400 words when you can write an article with 2000 words or more.
Besides, the content should be original.
Don’t just write about topics that have been written a million times already.

8. Offer Something Unique and Valuable
Creating a blog is not enough!
Well, you might get some traffic for a while.
But, in order to build a long-lasting and successful blog, you need to offer something that no one else is offering.
You should not be just writing about popular topics like food, beauty, style, home decoration, or travel.
You should also be offering something more unique and interesting. You should offer more value than the other blogs in your niche.
You can offer, for example:
- Unique recipes that no other blog shares
- Different perspective on common topics
- An attitude, sense of humor or writing style that is unique to your blog
- An informative yet humorous take on topics
- Well-researched and detailed reviews
- Quick but informative tutorials
- Unique insights about your topic
The idea is to create something special that people can’t get anywhere else. They have to come to your blog in order to get it!
The next step is to create a unique brand voice for your blog.
You should never copy other blogs in your niche or make a “me too” blog. You need to be yourself and create a strong brand image from the beginning.
9. Try With Different Content Types
If you’re serious about blogging, then you know that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to success. The key is to try out different types of content and see what works best for you and your audience.
I’ve been blogging for over 10 years, and I’ve experimented with all sorts of content. I’ve written long-form articles, short posts, listicles, how-tos, and anything else you can think of.
And I’ve found that the best way to find success is to try out different types of content and see what works best for you and your audience.
One type of content that I’ve had a lot of success with is listicles.
People love listicles because they’re easy to read and they offer a lot of value in a short amount of time. If you can write a great listicle, then you’re sure to get a lot of traffic and engagement.
Another type of content that I’ve found to be successful is how-to articles.
These types of articles offer readers a specific solution to a problem they’re having. If you can offer helpful and actionable advice, then you’re sure to get some traction with this type of content.
Finally, I would also recommend trying out different types of videos.
Videos are a great way to engage with your audience and they’re also very shareable. If you can create informative and entertaining videos, then you’ll be sure to get some good traffic from them.
So, those are just a few ideas to get you started.
Remember, it’s important to experiment with different types of content to see what works best for your blog. And, if you’re ever stuck, then don’t hesitate to reach out to me for help. You can contact me anytime.
10. Optimize Your Posts For Better Rankings
Readers are the lifeblood of any blog. If you can’t keep your readers, you can never make a successful blog. And, one of the best ways to keep readers is to create posts that they want to read and share.
Well, search engine robots are also readers! They crawl the web and read every piece of content that they find useful.
And, if you want your blog to be found in search engines, you should take some time optimizing each post.
What kind of optimizations?
Well, you should optimize your posts for both readers and search robots. You have to create an interesting post that people will want to read. And, you have to optimize that post for search engines.
What’s the bottom line?
You should create posts that will satisfy Google and your readers! That’s how you get more traffic, subscribers and engagement!
Here are some tips for optimizing your blog content:
- Use the right keywords.
- Don’t use a keyword that doesn’t have a lot of searches.
- Use your keywords in the title, meta description and throughout the content.
- Make sure that your images have a keyword in the name.
- Create a long and detailed post with at least 1500 words.
- Don’t focus on one keyword only.
- Use a wide range of keywords and keyword variations.
- Include links to your other blog posts, products or external sources (Wikipedia, forums, etc.), that may be useful for your readers.
The point is to create long, informative, and valuable posts that satisfy both your readers and Google!
Trust me, the result will be more traffic, subscribers, and engagement!
And, that’s what you want, right?
11. Promote Your Blog
Building a blog is not enough. You have to promote your blog if you want to succeed. I can’t emphasize that point enough. You have to promote your blog if you want more traffic, subscribers, and engagement!
Promoting your blog is not an easy task. You will have to spend hours every day promoting your blog, but the return will be worth it.
And, the best part is that you can do all that without spending a lot of money. You just have to use your creativity and be patient!
What do you have to do?
Here are some tips for promoting your blog:
- Think of something interesting and new. For example, a cooking contest, a blogging conference or a giveaway .
- You can also organize an online party where your readers have to collect points by commenting on various blog posts.
- Send a personal invitation to your friends and family. Don’t just send them the link to your blog, tell them why they should visit it.
- Optimize your posts for SEO and share them on social media sites, like Facebook or Pinterest .
- Comment on other blogs in your niche.
- Answer questions on ‘Question & Answer’ sites like Quora.
The more you promote your blog, the more traffic you will receive. And, the more traffic you receive, the stronger your brand becomes.
You will also gain an image of an influential person that knows his stuff.
It’s a lot easier to promote your blog than you may think. You just have to organize your time, organize your thoughts and use your creativity.
12. Get More Subscribers
There are many ways of getting more subscribers. And, it all starts with knowing who your target audience is.
Remember that you should always be on the lookout for new people who would be interested in your blog.
The whole point is to get as many people as possible to subscribe to your blog, but that doesn’t mean that all of them will become your subscribers!
Subscribers are people who receive your posts every time you write a new one. They don’t want to miss anything that you publish on your blog.
And, they will receive all your posts via email.
But, how do you know that they don’t want to miss anything you publish?
The answer is simple!
They will subscribe if you write high-quality posts that satisfy their needs. And, to do that you have to understand your audience and write posts that will answer their questions. That’s how you get more subscribers!
13. Involve Your Audience
Involvement is the key to success. If you want people to follow you, buy your products or share your blog posts, you have to involve them.
You need feedback from your audience if you want to improve your blog. You want to know if they are satisfied with it, what they don’t like and whether you can do better. You have to ask them questions, let them suggest topics, and discuss their ideas with them.
Everyone has a story to tell so don’t be afraid of asking your blog visitors for help. Inspire them, involve them and your blog will grow fast!
14. Include Relevant Images
Don’t just write reams and reams of content. Make sure that your posts are visually appealing as well. You can’t even imagine how important it is to have good images if you want your blog visitors to stay on your site.
They should be able to see what you are talking about and understand what you are trying to say. The more relevant images you include, the better! Basically, the right images help your audience understand the content better.
In short, they will be more engaged in what you have to say.
There’s another reason to include images.
Google’s visual search engine knows what your images are about. And, it uses this information to determine your topic and match it with relevant searches.
That’s why you should always use relevant images in blog posts!
15. Use The Right Keywords
Don’t overuse keywords, but don’t ignore them either. Keywords are the words that people use to find your blog on Google. You want to attract as many visitors as you can and that’s why keywords are so important.
But, don’t overdo it!
You should use the words that you want to rank for in your blog post title. They should appear naturally throughout your content.
Go for long-tail keywords relevant to your topic.
Long-tail keywords are keywords that are more specific. For example, if you write about fishing then your long-tail keywords may be ‘how to fish for trout’ or ‘how to fish for salmon, or ‘where to fish in Ireland’.
The more specific you are, the less likely it is that someone will use a different search term. That’s why it’s better to use long-tail keywords.
There are many keyword research tools that can help you find the right keywords for your blog posts. I personally prefer “Keyword Magic Tool“.
Here are some of the top keyword research tools:
Just select any one of the above choices and find some long keywords that you can include in your blog posts in a relevant way.
16. Use the Right Keyword Density
Keyword stuffing is what you should avoid.
It’s when you use the same keywords over and over again, without any relevance to the topic. All the search engines are very good at spotting keyword stuffing. And, they don’t like it at all.
In fact, if you do this, you will actually hurt your rankings and it will be harder for you to attract new visitors.
So, what happens when you keyword stuff?
Your readers won’t be able to understand what you are trying to say. And, Google will have a hard time figuring out the topic of your post.
So, don’t keyword stuff.
17. Keep Your Grammar In Check
People want to follow you because they like what you have to say.
So, if your writing is full of mistakes, you will show that you don’t care about the quality of your blog posts. That’s bad!
You should check your writing for mistakes.
It’s easy to do if you have a good Grammar checker extension installed in your browser. These extensions are free and can automatically detect any issues with your writing. I personally prefer to use Grammarly.
However, ProWritingAid is a good alternative to Grammarly.
Both Grammarly and ProWritingAid can be used for free and they both do a great job in detecting mistakes in your writing and giving suggestions.
Well, there are many grammar checkers online.
Here are some of the best grammar checker apps that you can use:
When you write a post in WordPress, these grammar apps will automatically underline any words that it thinks are spelled wrong.
So, you can check the suggestions and just fix what isn’t right.
All you need to do is to download and install the extension in your browser and you are good to do. The best part? It will work on all sites.
I prefer to use Grammarly because it works great for me.
You can also use ProWritingAid. It’s pretty good too. Well, if you don’t use a Grammar checker, at least make sure that your English is flawless.
Not only grammar but your punctuations and spelling should also be flawless. These apps also give brilliant suggestions to enhance your writing style.
18. Create Amazing Headlines
The headline of your blog post is the title that you have to include at the top of your blog post. It may seem like a small thing, but it’s not. It makes a big difference in attracting visitors to your site.
Research shows that a large number of visitors don’t even read past the headlines.
So, if your headline is not good enough, you won’t even get read. And, it means that you won’t get the traffic on the site you are looking for either.
So, you can see headlines are super important. To make your headlines better and attractive, you can use the following guidelines:
- Make them as descriptive as possible.
- Use lists and numbers in your headlines.
- It’s better to use action verbs like “How to” or “Use”
- Make the headlines unique.
Visitors are looking for content that they can’t find anywhere else. So, you should be original. Don’t steal stuff.
Make your headlines catchy, but don’t be cheesy.
19. Write Long Blog Posts
Creating long blog posts that contain a lot of information is the best way to attract visitors and get them engaged with your site.
Longer posts tend to rank higher in search results because Google and other search engines look for keywords that you used.
And, when your post is long enough, you can use more keywords in your content. At the same time, long blog posts help you to provide value to your readers. And, this is what you want.
Although long posts may take a little bit longer to rank and it’s easy for people to get distracted while reading them, long blog posts are the best way to keep people engaged. So, you should focus on creating long posts that will help you in making your site visible and more relevant.
Well, you should be on-topic and don’t use fluff. Because these things can make your posts look unnatural and untrustworthy.
You should avoid writing anything that may not interest the visitors too. And, if you want to make the post look natural and build a good relationship with your readers, then you should focus on creating educational and helpful blog posts that will make the visitors come back for more.
Usually, the longer you write, the better it is.
So, don’t be scared to write long posts.

20. Keep the Blog Updated Consistently
Updating your blog regularly is a great way to attract visitors and engage them with your site. When you update your blog content on a regular basis, it says that you are an active blogger, which is very important.
So, it’s always better to be active and keep your blog updated with fresh content because you have to deliver good content to your visitors. And, you have to keep them engaged with your site. You can also use social media for this.
If you are updating your blog once in a while, then visitors will stay on your site for just a brief period of time. And, this will result in getting less traffic.
Updating the site not only keeps it active but also makes it relevant and popular among search engines. And, if the site has fresh content, it means that your post will get more traffic because search engines love fresh content. So, you should create a writing schedule and publish blog posts on regular basis.
21. Don’t Be Boring
Boring posts won’t get many shares. People want interesting and useful content. That’s why they follow the people they like. So, you should always try to be entertaining and pay attention to human psychology.
If your post does not get many shares, it means that your content is boring. So, you should try to do something about it. When people read your blog post, they should enjoy it and want to share it with others.
At the same time, you should make your content valuable and longer. This way, people will get engaged with your blog and may share it.
22. Interlink Your Blog Posts
If you want to make it easier for people to find your older posts, then you should always link your posts with each other.
When you link one post to another, it will make both of them more relevant and useful. And, people would not only go to the new post that you just published but also visit your old posts.
So, it’s always a good idea to interlink your posts.
Also, interlinking your posts doesn’t only help your readers find old blog posts, it helps you with SEO because after you link one post to another, both of them become more relevant and search engines love this.
This way, you will get more traffic and drive targeted visitors with ease.
23. Don’t Try to Game the System (SEO)
Most people try to game the search engines because they want to get high rankings. And, that’s not a good idea because these tactics might help for some time, but in the long run, it doesn’t.
So, using black-hat SEO tactics is not a good idea.
At the same time, you should not overdo things or use too many keywords in your blog post because that’s not a good SEO practice as well.
If you want to build a true business and want your blog to remain for decades, then you should use white-hat SEO practices. White-hat SEO techniques are honest, ethical, long-term, and are proven to be effective.
Instead of trying to game the system, you should create valuable content and keep improving your site on regular basis.
This way, you will get high rankings and more traffic.
Well, black-hat techniques used to work years before. But, these days search engines are smart enough to detect it easily.
All these tricks that people use to rank their sites higher in the search engines won’t work anymore. So, there is no point in trying to use such tactics because Google and other search engines are always updating their algorithms.
24. Don’t Steal Content from Other Sites
At times people take content from other sites and publish it on their blog to save their time. But, this is not a good idea.
And, it might get you in trouble with the law.
If you are caught taking content from another site and publishing it on your own, you might get sued. In case, the owner of the content comes to know about it and he/she will be unhappy and take action against you.
In some cases, you might have to pay a huge amount of settlement money so that the owner removes the content from the court.
In some countries, this kind of action is considered a criminal offense, and people have been arrested for stealing content from other sites.
Well, that’s a very rare situation.
But still, you shouldn’t do it because search engines are smart enough to detect plagiarism nowadays. As a result, you will get into trouble. So, it’s always better to create your own content and not to steal it from other sites.
25. Avoid Spamming the Web with Links
When you publish an article on your blog, you should not publish it everywhere on the web. Well, some people try to do so by including links in their signatures of forums and other places where they register.
And, this is not a good idea because you will only get banned everywhere on the web and your signature submissions would be deleted.
So, you must avoid spamming your links everywhere on the web.
It also hurts your SEO because you are publishing your links on various web pages. As a result, they will get indexed by search engines. Having too many links in a short span of time might not be a good thing as far as SEO is concerned.
So, it’s always a good idea to create valuable content and promote your links the right way. Make sure that you don’t look like a spammer.
26. Don’t Publish Unrelated Blog Posts
Publishing unrelated posts on your blog is not a good idea for SEO.
People often do that with the impression that they can get better rankings if there are more pages on their website. But, this is not true.
You should only publish the relevant posts on your website because search engines crawl your site to figure out the relevancy of your content.
So, if you publish unrelated posts on your blog, there is no point in doing so because search engines will understand nothing by crawling your site.
In fact, search engines always look for authority websites based on a certain topic. So if your blog posts don’t relate to each other at least to some extent, it will be difficult for search engines to categorize them.
For example, if your blog is about “Dog Training”, you cannot post content on how to remove bugs from the kitchen. It has nothing to do with “Dog Training”. So, search engines will consider you a spammer.
Well, people might say that at least there are 200 posts on their blog. But, if they are unrelated to each other, it’s still a bad idea.
27. Make Your Blog Posts More Scannable
It is a good idea to make your blog posts scannable.
People tend to scan content looking for specific information. Breaking up your text into smaller paragraphs, using headings and subheadings, and using bullet points will help make your content more scannable.
It is also helpful to use short paragraphs with a maximum of three sentences. You can also use one-line sentence paragraphs more often.
By making your content more scannable, you will make it more likely that people will find the information they are looking for.
Here are some benefits of making your blog posts more scannable:
- People will be able to find the information more easily.
- Your blog posts will be more readable.
- You will convey your information more effectively.
- People will be more likely to share your content if they find it useful.
So, if you want to make your blog posts more scannable, use headings, subheadings, bullet points, and short paragraphs.
This will make your content more readable and effective.
28. SEO Optimize Your Site
Search engine optimization is the best and easiest way to get traffic and that’s what you should always focus on. You can use social media or do guest blogging, but SEO is the best way to get free traffic from search engines.
If you want your blog to be successful, then you should always optimize it for the search engines like Google or Bing.
The major search engines pay attention to relevant keywords, links, and many other factors to determine the ranking of any website. So, it’s a smart choice to stay updated on the latest SEO best practices.
Here are some basic things that you should do:
- Use descriptive and relevant titles for your posts.
- Use targeted keywords.
- Interlink relevant articles.
- Take SEO courses to get better at it.
- Create a sitemap and submit it to search engines.
- Write quality blog posts.
- Don’t keyword stuff your content.
- Use SEO tools to find opportunities for improvement
- Delete duplicate content.
If you want to better understand SEO, read this article.
No matter how good your blog posts are, if they are not well optimized to attract traffic from search engines, it will be hard to get targeted visitors.
29. Make Your Site Mobile Friendly
More and more people access the Internet using mobile devices these days.
And, if you can’t access your site from mobile devices, then it’s useless to have a blog because most of the traffic comes from mobile devices.
So, if you want to run a successful blog, then your site should be mobile-friendly.
If you are running WordPress, then you can use a plugin called WPtouch to make your site mobile-friendly.
The good news?
These days most WordPress premium themes are mobile-friendly.
So, you don’t have to buy another theme if you are using a good theme.
If your blog is running on a different platform, then you can either use a separate mobile site or use a plugin to make your site mobile-friendly.
30. Don’t Post Ugly Images
If your images aren’t optimized and look awful when shared on social media, then it will lead to poor traffic.
Many visitors may decide to leave immediately if they see hideous images. You also need to resize your images before uploading them to your blog.
Well, many WordPress plugins can also do it automatically.
Some of the WordPress image optimization plugins are:
In short, you should always upload images that are high-quality and have proper dimensions. You should not ignore the quality of your images. Because good images can make reading your blog posts interesting and fun.
31. Get More RSS Subscribers
RSS is an abbreviation for “Really Simple Syndication“. It’s a free service that was created to help people automatically subscribe to blogs.
If you have a lot of subscribers in your RSS feed list, then it will be easy for people to subscribe to your blog. When someone subscribes to your blog via RSS, they will be notified when you publish a new post.
So, you should focus on building an RSS subscriber list.
You can use a free RSS service like Feedburner or a premium service like GetResponse to automate the process.
32. Respond to Your Readers
If you are running a blog, then it means you have readers.
And, when someone leaves a comment or asks you a question, then you should always respond to it.
Otherwise, your blog becomes a one-way communication tool. An active and responsive blog can be the best way to build relationships with people, which helps in increasing your blog’s authority and popularity.
So, you should always be ready to respond to comments and questions from your readers. I know it can take time, but it’s a smart thing to do.
And, if you are very consistent about responding to comments and questions, then it can lead to increased traffic and a loyal following.
If you don’t wish to respond to comments or feel like it’s taking too much of your time, you may turn off comments. And, if you still want to give your readers a chance to post comments, make sure you respond.
33. Create a Better About Me Page
Many bloggers ignore this section but if you want your blog to be successful, then you should stop ignoring it too.
How would people know if your blog is the right blog for them? If you have nothing to say about yourself, how would you convince others?
An about me page is usually the first thing that people read when they land on your blog. And, if you have a poor about me page, then it may discourage them from reading any further.
About me, pages can be a great way to introduce yourself to your readers. You can talk about anything, from what you do for a living, where you work, and how excited you are to share your thoughts through your blog.
So, when you are creating an about me page, make sure to keep it useful. Also, avoid including unnecessary information.
34. Share Others Content on Your Site
You should not only share your content on your site, you should also share content from other sites. This is a smart strategy as it can help you in building relationships with other bloggers.
Sometimes your blog posts may not be as useful as other posts. If you found a useful article on the web, which might help your readers, you should not hesitate to link to it from your blog posts.
Think about it, if you are reading an article that talks about marketing tricks, wouldn’t you want to read more articles like it?
I know you would.
So, if I also link to other quality articles that talk about similar topics, your readers will like it. Because you are helping them to find great content without any extra effort. In turn, your readers will like you too.
35. Create Quality Backlinks
Backlinks are links that point back to your blog.
Once you start getting backlinks from high authority sites, it means people like your content and they want others to read it too.
Now, you should not expect others to create backlinks on their own.
You have to ask them first. It’s not hard to ask someone for a link, but it’s very difficult to get that person to link to you. Most people will reject your request even if your blog post is super-useful.
Well, let’s not get into why they do it.
Understand that there are still a few people who value quality content and will not hesitate to link to your blog.
So, you should keep trying.
Well, actively trying to build links without focusing on content quality is not something search engines prefer you to do. So before want to work hard to build links pointing to your site, make sure your blog is worthy of being linked to. Otherwise, it can lead to penalties from Google.
36. Try Guest Posting on Other Blogs
Guest posting is a great way to build backlinks for your blog.
If you have a blog, there are many other blogs that might be looking for guest bloggers for more getting more content on their site. And, if your content is useful, they will be happy to include a link to your site. So, guest posts can be a great way to get links, increase traffic and boost your SEO.
But, there are a few things you need to understand.
You should not guest post on sites with low authority. It doesn’t help with SEO and you get the value you deserve in most cases.
But, it’s fine to guest post on high-quality authority sites.
Also, guest blogging is not for everyone.
You should only guest post if you have the time and energy to write good content for other websites.
Also, finding the right kind of sites for guest posts is not easy.
You have to do a lot of research before finding the right site to guest post. And, even after finding the right site, you have to pitch your idea to them before they accept it because not everyone will agree.
So the best thing you can do is just keep trying.
In the end, guest posting is a great way to get exposure for your blog and attract new visitors from high authority sites.
37. Use Social Media Sites
Social media sites can drive a huge number of visitors to your blog.
Every popular social media site has millions of users and they aren’t just sitting around. They want to read, view, consume something, so you should give them content that’s worth spending time on.
Social media sites can do a lot more if you know how to use them right.
You should consider building your brand on social media. If you can create a strong base of loyal followers, it will help in the future too. So, if you want to build your blog’s influence, you should invest time and energy into social media.
38. Build Large Quantity of Posts
In order to succeed as a blogger, it is important you have a high quantity of posts on your site. I mean, if you only have 10 articles published on your blog, it will be hard to grow your blog and make it a success.
When you have many posts, it’s easy to rank for a variety of keywords.
In short, the more blog posts you have, the more opportunity you get for ranking in search engines. Search engines like Google work on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Well, not exactly, but it’s something very similar.
Well, this is just a story for another day.
The point here is to build high-quality content in large quantities to succeed as a blogger. If you build high-quality content in small numbers, it will be difficult to keep ranking for the long haul.
To succeed with blogging, you need hundreds of high-quality blog posts. If not, it will be difficult to rank in the long run.
Also, with more blog posts, search engines will consider your site as an authority. Just look at some of the top blogs on the planet.
They have a ton of great content, and they rank for a lot of keywords.
39. Know Your Audience
When you know your audience well, it is easier to create content that they will love. If you write about things, you don’t actually care about, there’s no way you will ever get any success with your blog.
On the other hand, when you write about things you truly care about and know a lot about, your posts will start to rank higher in search engines.
Also, the more you know about your audience, the easier it will be to connect with them. When you can connect with your audience, they will open up to your site and that’s when the magic happens.
40. Create Your Unique Selling Point (USP)
We all have a unique selling point. The thing that makes us different from the other 500 million blogs.
Your unique selling point is not just a tagline or a title. It’s a value of your blog that makes it stand out from the crowd.
It’s the thing that makes you, you.
So your unique selling point should be an integral part of your blogging strategy. Simply put, it should be something that sets your blog apart from other blogs.
Your unique selling point is the factor that separates you from everyone else.
Do you know those websites that try to stand out with a catchy tagline or an interesting title? Well, as hard as they try, it’s still not enough.
When you look at them, they just blend in with the rest of the crowd. Also, a catchy tagline or a title won’t work forever. You have to keep them fresh and relevant.
So, how do you create a unique selling point?
It’s easy. Just ask yourself one simple question, “What makes my blog different from other similar blogs?”.
If you can’t answer that question quickly, your blog probably doesn’t have a unique selling point. So, if you can’t answer that question, it’s time to fix the problem immediately and really do something about it.
41. Don’t Write for Money
Everybody wants to make money with their blog, and I don’t blame them. The truth is that there’s a lot of money in blogging.
However, if you don’t enjoy your blog and write only for the money, it will be difficult to succeed with blogging.
When you blog for entertainment, your posts will come out naturally. You won’t be stressed about what to write and how to monetize it.
So, you have to enjoy what you are doing.
After all, it’s your passion that will guide you where others fail.
When you blog for fun, you will not only enjoy the process but also get better with it. Your knowledge about blogging will grow rapidly and your traffic growth will be unstoppable. And, that’s what you really want, right?
42. Use WordPress Plugins For SEO
Once you have got your blog up and running, you should use WordPress plugins for SEO. There are many WordPress plugins that can help you optimize your blog for SEO so that you can rank higher in search engines.
However, you should know how to choose the right plugin for your blog. Otherwise, it will be a terrible mess and you won’t succeed with your SEO efforts.
There are many free WordPress plugins for SEO, but you should only use them if they are reliable and really work.
To avoid wasting your time on plugins that don’t work, it’s important to test their effectiveness before you actually use them. After all, you are looking for something that will help you grow your traffic, not break it.
So, you should go with plugins that are popular and recommended by others. The following are some plugins you can try out:
- Yoast SEO
- RankMath
- All in One SEO
While using these plugins doesn’t guarantee SEO success, but they will certainly help you with your efforts.
And, that is what really matters in the end.
43. Use Keyword Research Tools
Keyword research tools will help you find low competition, high traffic keywords that you can rank for with ease.
If you want your blog to be successful, you should look for keywords that have a medium to high search volume and low competition.
There are many keyword research tools available today.
The following are some tools that can help:
- Keyword Magic Tool by SEMrush
- Ahrefs Keyword Explorer
- SEMscoop
- Google Adwords Keyword Planner
- Serpstat
These keyword research tools help you discover the perfect keywords that you should target within your blog posts.
The right keywords should drive a high number of organic visitors to your site, while also converting those visitors into subscribers and customers.
44. Perform an SEO Audit
After you have started blogging, your next step should be to do an SEO audit of your website. While there are many things you can do on your own, sometimes it’s better to hire a professional SEO consultant.
You can also use online SEO tools or services to help you with your efforts.
Tools like SEMrush can give you insight into what is wrong with your site and how to fix it. However, you have to understand that not everything can be fixed with WordPress plugins. Sometimes you may need a complete site redesign or a server switch for optimal SEO performance.
But how will you do it if you don’t know what to fix?
That’s why you should do an SEO audit so that you can discover where your current SEO efforts are lacking. This way, you can make the necessary changes to grow your website, which helps you get more organic traffic.
When you do an SEO audit, you not only discover things that are wrong with your site but you also get to know about the things that are working for your blog. This way, you can remove what’s not working and use more of what is working for you, which ultimately helps your traffic grow.
45. Search for Competitors Keywords
After you have chosen the keywords for your blog, you should now optimize your posts for those particular keywords. While optimizing your posts, you can also perform competitor analysis.
To do this, you should first look at your competitors’ blog posts and see which keywords they are targeting. This will help you know what keywords your competitors are using to rank higher in the SERP.
If you find out which keywords have helped them rank well, you can use those same keywords as well. This way, you’ll not only get more targeted search engine traffic but you also gain an upper hand over your competitors.
Even if you are a beginner in blogging, you can easily do a competitor analysis using online tools. Here are some tools for competitor analysis:
- Ubersuggest
- SpyFu
- SEMrush
- Ahrefs
- SimilarWeb
- SpyFu
- SerpIQ
When you do a competitor analysis, you can easily come up with a list of keywords that your competitors are using. You can then use those same keywords within your posts to get more organic traffic.
But, don’t be a full-fledged copycat.
Just use the same keywords, but don’t copy everything you see your competitors do on their website. You should be original when it comes to your blog.
46. Imitate the Pros
When you are new to blogging, it’s often hard for you to create something unique and original. But, you can easily imitate the pros and create something similar to what they have created.
For example, it’s often hard for beginners to create a blog like Problogger or Moz without any blogging experience.
But, if you look at their blogs and try to imitate the layout, the way they present their content, their style of writing, and so on, you can easily create something similar to what they have created.
Also, make sure to check out their about page, which will tell you a lot about the blogger and what they do.
This way you can create something similar to theirs.
47. Improve Your Social Media Skills
Before investing in paid ads or doing SEO, you should always improve your social media marketing skills. This is where you build your followers and create a buzz around your blog.
You can do this by posting high-quality, engaging images that are more likely to get shared on social media platforms.
You can also use images that are related or even the same as your blog post’s topic. This is good for making your blog post more noticeable when it’s shared on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest.
As well as creating interesting images, you should also learn how to create eye-catching titles that draw readers in.
You can use tools like Canva.com to design stunning images that are perfect for getting the most views on social media sites.
You should also post regularly on social media, making sure that you split your blog posts into smaller chunks of information and schedule them in advance. Doing this helps to keep the conversation going even when you are not around.
48. Connect with Other Bloggers
It’s important to develop good relationships with other bloggers and industry players. When you connect with other people, it can lead to some really great opportunities to grow your blog.
For example, when I first started out, I was introduced to my all-time favorite host HostGator by a fellow blogger.
He was hosting his site on HostGator and he made a post about it in one of his blog posts. So, I got online and managed to get a free domain name and hosting. It was possible as HostGator had a special offer available at the time.
Through networking, you can meet influential people that can help improve your site or even help you get your site noticed.
49. Outsource Your Work
Outsourcing your work will give you more time to focus on growing your blog. So, instead of wasting valuable hours every day working on your blog, why not outsource some of the work that you don’t enjoy?
There are hundreds of thousands of people online looking for freelance jobs. They can help you with your blogging tasks and save you time.
You can use this extra time to focus on other important aspects of your blog. If you want, you can even outsource part of your writing tasks and focus on the more fun aspects of your blogging.
It’s a great way to save time.
You can also use it as an opportunity to network with other bloggers.
50. Develop Your Writing Skills
One of the best ways to improve your blogging skills is by developing your writing skills. When you write your blog posts, make sure that you are keeping them fun and interesting. Make your sentences flow well and try to keep your paragraphs short.
You can also try to improve your vocabulary. You don’t have to be an English major but you should at least learn the basics of what different words mean.
This helps you to avoid making mistakes in your blog posts, making them more professional. When you are writing make sure to avoid using slang or abbreviated words. Using simple English also helps to make your blog posts easy to read so that more people enjoy them. This leaves a great impression and encourages them to come back for more.
51. Blog Consistently
You should always blog consistently if you want to succeed. To do this you will need to find a good schedule for blogging and stick with it.
You can post once a week or twice a week.
Whatever you choose, stick to your schedule and make sure that you stick to it. It helps you to grow your readership if you blog regularly.
If you are having trouble keeping up with the publishing schedule that you have set for yourself, then you might want to think about outsourcing some of the work that you don’t enjoy.
But, remember that consistency is better than constantly publishing. Don’t feel like you need to constantly publish your blog posts. It doesn’t help you and is actually more likely to get you ignored.
52. Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help
You may feel like it is a weakness that you need help with your blogging. But, this is not true. There are so many resources online that can help you to grow your blog.
It’s ok to ask for help.
I know that there are thousands of bloggers out there that want to help each other grow. So, don’t be afraid to seek help.
Just remember that you should only ever ask for help if you are willing to give it too! We can all learn from each other, so never be afraid to learn from someone else.
If you are a beginner, you can send your new blog post to someone who is more experienced and they can give you some feedback.
You might even learn a thing or two from them!
It’s always better to have more knowledge than less. So, use this opportunity to grow your blog and to help others too.
53. Promote Your Blog
You will always need to promote your blog if you want it to be successful. This is key to your blog’s success. Without promotion, you will not be able to achieve your goals and you won’t grow your readership.
Promoting yourself is part of the job of a blogger.
It’s ok to promote yourself, so long as you aren’t being annoyed about it. Promoting is a great way to get your name out there. It’s no good if only one person knows about you, so use the promotion to your advantage.
There are many different ways that you can promote your blog and there is no way to list them all. But, here are some tips for promoting your blog:
First of all, you can try your best to get on social media and to build a following there. Social media is free and it can help you to grow your readership. You can also post on forums and comment on other blogs. Just remember that you shouldn’t just do this for the sake of promoting your blog, but because you are genuinely interested in the topic.
I have written a comprehensive article on the best ways to promote your blog. You can click here to check that out if you want more information!
54. Don’t be Afraid of Competition
You are not at a disadvantage if there are several other blogs in your niche.
Competition is actually good for you. It allows you to grow your readership and can really help you to improve your blog in general.
Competition can help you to become better at your blogging game.
So, don’t be afraid of it.
Remember that the only reason that you are competing with other bloggers is that there is a high demand for the topic that you’re blogging about.
This means that hundreds of other people are trying to do the same as you, but that there is still a lot of room for growth.
Don’t be discouraged by your competition, but use it to grow.
55. Comment on Other Blogs
A great way to promote your blog is to leave thoughtful comments on other blogs.
This can help you to get more traffic and will help you to build relationships with other bloggers too. This networking will ultimately help you to grow your blog and to get more readers. You might even make some friends this way!
Remember that commenting on other blogs is not all about you. It’s great to share your personal blog with others, but don’t be too sales-y.
Be sure to leave a link in your comment, but don’t spam other blogs. This is annoying and the wrong way to go about it.
If you want, you can also leave a comment on a blog post that is in your niche.
But again, don’t be too sales-y.
It only hurts your blog in the long run if you are too pushy.
56. Make More Than One Blog
There is absolutely no reason to stick to just one blog. You can have more than one blog and they can all be about different topics.
This is one of the best blogging tips for beginners!
Start a second blog or even a third.
Remember that once you start blogging more than just your one topic, it will be easier for you to grow and become successful.
Just make sure that each blog focuses on a specific type of topic.
I personally prefer to run more than one site.
Becoming a successful blogger also means that you earn a lot of money through your blogs, which is a great thing.
Having just one blog may limit your ability to grow your income.
Of course, you should do it if you know you can manage multiple blogs on different topics without sacrificing content quality. Because if you are not able to give enough time to your blog, it will make things worse.
Don’t limit yourself to just one blog, at least if you can do it.
57. Look for Niches that are Lonely
When you are looking for a niche to start blogging about, it’s best if you find a niche that is somewhat “lonely.”
A lot of blog topics are popular because they are very trendy or seem interesting.
But you need to remember that something that is popular, may not always be the best place for your blog to start out.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with blogging about something that is very popular. There are millions of blogs on WordPress alone that are related to financial tips, for example. If you want to be successful in this niche, then you will have to work hard and give your readers valuable content.
But will you be able to stand out from all of the other bloggers? It’s not impossible, but it will definitely be a lot harder.
A good place to start is a somewhat “lonely” niche.
This means that there aren’t many blogs on the topic and it hasn’t been done a million times. This means that you have a lot of room to grow and to create your blog. It also means that it will be easier for you to get noticed among other bloggers.
A lot of times, you will find that the best niches are the ones that aren’t too competitive. You can still be successful and make a lot of money in these niches, but you will have to work harder at it.
58. Don’t Be Afraid to Fail
Everyone makes mistakes.
And, you will too.
Even if you start a blog and give it everything that you have, sometimes things won’t turn out the way you expected them to.
The only way to know if your blog is successful or not is to give it time.
It’s important that you don’t compare yourself to other successful bloggers. It’s not smart to compare your blog with the ones that are there for years.
Remember that you are just starting out.
The best thing for you to do is get out there and give it your best shot.
It’s important that you learn from your mistakes, but don’t beat yourself up about them either. Learn from your mistakes and make changes! This will allow you to see what works and what doesn’t.
You can’t be afraid to fail.
59. Set Long Term Goals for Your Blog
It’s easy to get caught up in what you are blogging about right now and forget about the future. But as an aspiring blogger, it’s very important to set long-term goals for your blog. You need to figure out what you want your blog to become.
Of course, your goals will change throughout the years. You might want to start out by blogging about SEO tips. But over time, you might want to branch out and start a separate blog dedicated to social media.
It’s important that you set goals for your blog so that you can work towards a certain goal that will benefit you long term.
If you don’t have goals for your blog, then your blog will never grow and you will never know when you have achieved your ultimate goal.
If blogging is your full-time job, then setting goals for yourself should be one of your primary goals. You need to get your priorities in order and make sure that you are constantly working on achieving your goals!
60. Be a Good Listener
One of the best ways for your blog to grow is by being a good listener. It’s important that you listen to feedback from your readers, as well as other bloggers who have already become successful.
For example, if you are blogging about home decor, then listen to what people like and don’t like about the blog theme.
Also, pay attention to what your readers want from you as a blog owner. Do they want more pictures? Do they want you to post more about this or that?
By paying attention to the feedback that you are getting, you will be able to make your blog even better. Being a good listener will help you to create more posts that are of high quality and that your readers will enjoy. If you want your blog to grow, then you must be a good listener.
That’s Inexpensive!
At the end of the day, running a successful blog doesn’t have to be expensive.
Of course, there are some things that you will need to invest in initially so that your blog is set up correctly. But a lot of times, you can find some great deals on new domain names and hosts.
If you have been following some of the tips that I have shared already, then you should know how to save money when it comes to building your blog. A good hosting company doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. It’s important that you find cheap hosting like Verpex which is reliable too.
61. Don’t Get Discouraged by a Slow Start
Everyone, no matter how good they are at something, needs time to get started.
When you first start out, your posts may not get that many views or comments. You might feel discouraged by this. It’s important to remember that you have to give your blog some time before it will really take off.
You can’t expect to be a successful blogger overnight.
Remember that in order to become successful at something, you have to put in the time and effort, so that you can achieve your goals.
It usually takes at least 6 months to a year for your blog traffic to really start picking up. So if you’ve only been blogging for 6 months, don’t get discouraged already! Just keep doing what you are doing and give it some more time.
62. Focus on Quality Over Quantity
In order to have a successful blog, you will need to focus on quality over quantity. If it takes you a month to write and publish a post, then that’s ok.
So long as the content is rich and full of great information that your readers will love, then it doesn’t matter when it gets published.
The internet is a busy place and you might not get all of the traffic that you want to your blog on the first day that you publish a post.
It’s important to give your blog content time to circulate in the blogosphere before you worry about driving all of the traffic to your blog.
This means that you should spend more time on making each post the best that it can be, instead of rushing to write as much content as you can to publish every day.
So long as your content is useful and of high quality, then it doesn’t matter how often you publish new posts on your blog. Well, it matters, but not as much as the quality and usefulness of your content does.
63. Be Flexible
Everyone has an opinion about what makes a blog successful. But there is no right answer to this question.
One tip that may work for some blogs, may not work for others.
But that doesn’t mean that you can’t be successful with your blog! You just need to be flexible and open-minded when it comes to learning how to improve your blog.
If you try one idea on your blog and it doesn’t seem to be working, then try something else. Don’t get discouraged if your blog isn’t doing as well as you want it to, just keep trying new things.
Remember that learning how to be a successful blogger takes time and effort, but with the right attitude and some patience, you will be able to achieve your goals.
64. Learn from Others Who Are Successful
You might feel like you need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to your blog. But the truth is, you don’t!
There are a lot of successful bloggers out there that can teach you how to be successful at blogging.
Instead of trying to figure out everything on your own, take some time to learn from the experience and knowledge of other bloggers.
You can learn a lot from someone that has been blogging for a while.
So make sure that you spend some time reading other blogs, commenting, and contributing to the blogosphere. This will help make your blog a success much faster than if you try to figure everything out on your own.
65. Monetize Your Blog
It’s a motivation booster to monetize your blog!
It doesn’t matter how much you are earning. It’s always better to earn a few dollars than earn absolutely nothing.
If you only keep writing blog posts for months without earning a dollar, it will usually demotivate you and you’ll probably decide to quit.
Even though you shouldn’t blog only for money, you’ll be a fool if you ignore the money-making potential of your blog. In fact, this is the reason why most bloggers start their blog in the first place.
If you want to make money from your blog, you will need to monetize it. This means that you will have to try a number of different options before you find the one that’s right for your blog.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with all kinds of different options, as this will help you discover which methods work best for your blog.
As a beginner, I suggest that you try affiliate marketing. You can also sell your own products such as ebooks, courses, and services through your website. All these methods don’t require a lot of traffic. So it doesn’t matter if you are just starting out, there is still time to start making money through your blog.
66. Track Your Performance
If you want to be successful at blogging, then you’ll need to know how well your blog is doing. You can do this by tracking your blog’s performance over time.
In order to do this, you will need a great analytics tool such as Google Analytics which allows bloggers to track their blog’s performance over time.
By checking your traffic and reader statistics regularly, you can spot small issues before they become big problems. You will also know if you’re on the right track to being a successful blogger.
It’s also a great way to motivate yourself. If your blog’s traffic is increasing every month, then you’ll know that you’re doing a great job and it will help motivate you to keep blogging. Tracking also helps you discover which topics are performing well for you and which ones aren’t getting much attention.
